Discount calculator: find the sale price and the percentage off

What to calculate

Rounding always goes down, so the real discount is never smaller than the one you entered.

Enter your numbers and the result shows up here as you type.

Schedule this discount with PopAutomate

Instead of editing prices by hand the night before a sale, let PopAutomate apply the discount to your Salla or Zid products on time and restore the original prices when the offer ends.

The discount formulas

Every discount calculation comes down to two formulas. The calculator does them for you; here they are if you want to check the maths yourself:

  • Price after discount = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100)
  • Discount % = (old price − new price) ÷ old price × 100
  • Price before discount = price after discount ÷ (1 − discount ÷ 100)

Rounding and the real discount

Many stores prefer prices like 153.99 over 154. The calculator always rounds down, so the real discount ends up slightly bigger than the one you entered, never smaller, and it shows you the real percentage after rounding.

VAT

Choose whether the prices you enter include VAT, exclude it, or carry no VAT at all, and the calculator shows the sale price both before and after VAT. The discount percentage itself doesn't change, because VAT is charged on the discounted price. For VAT-only sums, use the VAT calculator, where you can also set your own rate.

Selling in Saudi Arabia?

Store discounts in Saudi Arabia need a permit from the Ministry of Commerce and come with rules, so check the current rules on the Ministry of Commerce website before the season and read the Saudi discount permit guide. And before you pick a percentage, check whether the discount is profitable at your margin.

How to use it in 3 steps

  1. Choose what to calculate

The price after a discount, the discount between two prices, the original price before a discount, or a whole list of prices at once.

  2. Enter your numbers

Type the price and the discount, say whether your prices include VAT, and pick a rounding if you want prices that end in .99.

  3. Copy the sale price

The result appears as you type, with how much the customer saves and the real discount after rounding. Put it in your store's sale price field, or schedule it in PopAutomate.

Worked examples

23% off for a holiday sale

A product at 200: 200 × (1 − 0.23) = 154, and the customer saves 46.

The same discount, ending in .99

154 becomes 153.99, and the real discount is about 23.01% instead of 23%.

30% off for Black Friday

A product at 349: 349 × 0.7 = 244.30. Rounded to .99 it becomes 243.99, a real discount of 30.09%.

What was the price before the discount?

A price of 150 after a 25% discount: 150 ÷ 0.75 = 200.

The discount between two prices

From 250 down to 200: (250 − 200) ÷ 250 × 100 = 20%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the discount percentage between two prices?

Subtract the new price from the old price, divide the difference by the old price, then multiply by 100. For example, a product that was 250 and now sells for 200: (250 − 200) ÷ 250 × 100 = 20%. In the calculator, choose "Discount between two prices" and enter both prices.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, if a product costs 150 after a 25% discount, its original price was 150 ÷ 0.75 = 200.

Should I take the discount off before or after VAT?

You get the same result either way, because the discount is a percentage and VAT is charged on the discounted price. With 15% VAT, a product at 100 before VAT (115 with VAT) and a 20% discount becomes 80 before VAT and 92 with VAT, and taking 20% straight off 115 also gives 92. Just enter your prices the same way your store shows them.

How do I show the original price next to the sale price in my store?

On Salla and Zid, put the sale price in the product's sale price field and leave the regular price as it is. On Shopify, set the price to the sale price and the "compare-at price" to the original. Either way, your store shows the original price crossed out next to the new one. The calculator gives you the sale price ready for that field.

How do I apply the same discount to hundreds of products at a set time?

PopAutomate applies the discount to the products or categories you choose in your Salla or Zid store, at the time you set, and puts the original prices back when the offer ends. If each product needs its own price, build a CSV with the bulk sale price file tool and upload it to PopAutomate.

Bulk sale price file

Paste your product IDs or SKUs and prices, pick a discount, and download a CSV ready to schedule in PopAutomate.

VAT calculator

Add VAT to a price or take it out of a VAT-inclusive one, and get your sale price with VAT included. 15% by default, any rate you need.
